The MAX8770/MAX8771/MAX8772 are 2/1-phase inter-leaved Quick-PWMâ„¢ step-down VID power-supply con-trollers for notebook CPUs. True out-of-phase operationreduces input ripple current requirements and output volt-age ripple while easing component selection and layoutdifficulties. The Quick-PWM control provides instanta-neous response to fast load current steps. Active voltagepositioning reduces power dissipation and bulk outputcapacitance requirements and allows ideal positioningcompensation for tantalum, polymer, or ceramic bulk out-put capacitors.The MAX8770/MAX8771/MAX8772 are intended for twodifferent notebook CPU core applications: either buckingdown the battery directly to create the core voltage, orelse bucking down the +5V system supply. The single-stage conversion method allows this device to directlystep down high-voltage batteries for the highest possibleefficiency. Alternatively, 2-stage conversion (steppingdown the +5V system supply instead of the battery) athigher switching frequency provides the minimum possi-ble physical size.A slew-rate controller allows controlled transitionsbetween VID codes, controlled soft-start and shutdown,and controlled exit from suspend. A thermistor-basedtemperature sensor provides a programmable thermal-fault output (VRHOT). A power-monitor output (POUT)provides an analog voltage output proportional to thepower consumed by the CPU. The MAX8770/MAX8771/MAX8772 include output undervoltage protection (UVP)and thermal protection, and the MAX8770/MAX8771 alsoinclude overvoltage protection (OVP). When any of theseprotection features detect a fault, the controller shutsdown. A voltage-regulator power-OK (PWRGD) outputindicates the output is in regulation. A clock enable(CLKEN) output provides proper system startup sequenc-ing. Additionally, the MAX8771 has a phase-good(PHASEGD) output, and the MAX8770/MAX8772 includestrue differential current sense.The MAX8770/MAX8771/MAX8772 implement the IntelIMVP-6+ code set and the required IMVP-6+ control sig-nals.
